Anatomy of a website: Kauneustoimittajien yhdistys

The website of the association of Finnish beauty journalists was badly outdated. It had been built on WordPress but unfortunately any of it parts hadn't been updated in years. It was running on old version of WordPress and the theme looked old. It was time for a dust up. The original colouring which included pink and purple didn't fit the wishes of the current members of the association. Most of the basic content was already there, only some of the structure was to be changed. The members listing and advertisement section needed to be rebuilt. The original members listing didn't include photos or some of the additional information and the advertisement section was on autoscroll and it was difficult to update. The old site wasn't obviously responsive and that was to be fixed now. The site and association also needed a simple new logo.

For starters WordPress was upgraded to the latest version, some new plugins were installed and new content types were set for advertisement the members listing. The blue and green colouring was a wish from the members of the association. They wanted a fresh and bright colouring and a clear logo. For the main colouring I picked bright "spring" greens and turquoise blues and added an extremely simple logo. The coral-pink nail polish type splash was created to add a little contrast to otherwise very oceanic coloured site. The website's content doesn't update very often and it's quite minimal and mostly text based. In order to make the information easily available the structure is very straightforward. Each page has lots of air between it's elements and there's no unnecessary trickery in the way the information is presented.

The website is fully responsive, designed with the smaller screen sizes in mind. The biggest difference between the wider and narrower screen size versions are with the background and navigation. Green background and the subtle gradient on the top of the site is removed completely for mobile and the navigation is switched to a drop down version. Due to the structure and design being generally light there's no need to hide content or to make drastic layout changes for smaller screen sizes.
