Do you ever have the sort of dream you know you are dreaming and can affect the events? The kind of a dream in which you know you can change what's happening and you can make adjustments to where you are and who you are with. Even maybe sometimes change the "actor" in the dream if she or he doesn't look like supposed? I do, sometimes. My dreams tend to be really imaginative, since I do have been blessed with a huge amount of imagination. So last night my feverish mind created a story, in which I knew I was dreaming.

It was a long dream with a rather interesting story. Or maybe I should say it was a long line of dreams, since I think I even kind of woke up sometime in the middle of all of it. Obviously it wouldn't make much sense if I would tell the whole story now, even if I would remember all of it. But the point was that me and a bunch of other people (who ever they were) had to find something. Of course there was some bad guys, but they didn't expect me to be in the crew trying to find them. So they made a mistake, which led me to realize where they and the thing we were supposed to find was. They send us a video and in the dream logic I recognized the place they were. I don't believe it was even a real place, just something my imagination came up with. And part of me knew that during the dream. I just didn't let it bother myself.
Now we get to the part were I started to work my magic: After I had recognized the location I had to sneak into the place. It was a office building with long white hallways. But dreams are sometimes a bit unpredictable so suddenly I was back at my childhood home, going upstairs to my old room. That was the wrong place, but I had to go on, so I could find the right office. I walked into my room and opened the wall. I knew if I would believe I could walk through the that new door on the wall and I wouldn't fall. Cause then I would be back in that white hallway. My childhood home is very familiar to me so I suddenly knew I would fall down through the air. Fall and hurt myself landing to the ground. I even tried to put my foot out and felt nothing under it. So I closed my eyes and let myself to know the hallway would be there and took that step. And there it was. The hallway was back and I could continue with my mission.
Designing is like dreaming and trying to control the dream. Whether it's a concept, website layout or virtual worlds building project, it's like creating a door on the familiar wall and taking a step on the thin air. And like in a dream the common sense (or others who think they are presenting the common sense) may try and interfere the process by telling you this hasn't been done or it hasn't worked before, hence it cannot happen. It's like creating a hallway were there is no hallway.
