Slow Sunday: Getting over yourself

The first thought on your mind is I'm talking about you. Not a group of people, not an unspecified person. You, specifically. Who else would I be talking about? Your mistake is understandable. You, specifically and personally, are taking it personally. Your mind works that way. It's built to be selfish, to believe everything is about you. If you want to stop making this mistake, believing that everyone is always talking about you, you must first get over yourself. First, our own conduct online is to blame. The way we are talking about each other, when we don't want to name names. Subtweeti...

Read for your life

One thing is painfully clear. The technology has made information easy to access, and easy to create. This has led to incredible amount of lies being spread around. If an orange guy yells it loud enough, everyone will be sure to hear it. If someone wants you to believe a woman is crooked, all they need to do is to write a couple of articles and spread them around social media. The amount of information and disinformation is incredible. While you can always be fooled by all that disinformation, however smart and educated you are, this doesn't mean you shouldn't try and learn to see the differ...

Success, choices and other lies

Success! More than anything, that's what you desire. You measure your value as a person, the value of your business and the value of your choices in the terms of success. Sometimes it's about money, sometimes it's about health, sometimes it's about the impact you make. Choices, they must lead to success. Fake it 'til you make it. Not the first time you heard that , is it? Pop that phrase in to your preferred search engine and you get loads of articles about how to become a success by following the philosophy. No wonder. Smile (don't whine)

While there are those of us who call for non-glittery authenticity and understand that even well doing people have bad days, there's this pressure of being positive online. Uplifting stories of success and happiness are in. Anything else is to be silenced to death. During my daily selfies series on Instagram I've noticed an interesting behaviour depending on which sort of post I make. There are those who loyally like and comment even the less uplifting posts. Then there are those who only like and comment the smiley pics. The wider the smile, the more likes. I also get comments which tel...

Lost connection

Our relationship begun in December 2011. Things were going smooth from the start. Recently I had started to look at a younger model, but I wasn't yet ready to let go. I thought we had at least weeks, if not months to go. Then some unexpected things happened. I'm talking about my four and half years old iPhone 4s. It's battery was giving up and it didn't quite have what it takes to run the latest iOS or the updated apps. I mean yes, it was still working, but it was sluggish and sometimes prone to crashes. I had to charge it often twice a day, depending on the usage. Periscope didn't let me up...

Why I don't do to-do lists

I used to think making to-do lists is the way to live, learn and work. It seemed like anyone who was someone was making to-do lists, thus should I too. After years of struggle, lots of undone lists and feeling like a failure, I stopped. Make a search for subjects related to productivity, success and organisation, and you will eventually find an enthusiastic case for to-do lists. To-do lists are everywhere. Bloggers offer printable to-do lists as gifts for subscribing to their emails. There are courses and coaching of using to-do lists better. Your smartphone is filled with apps for making yo...

Don't click!

It was an ad. I looked at it, got interested and wanted to click. But something held me back. What held me back wasn't the fear of being tracked, I'm not that silly. I know I'm already being tracked everywhere I go online. I just didn't want to give in and click an ad. If I did they would win. Whoever "they" are. Someone would profit from my click and someone profiting is horrible, terrible, awful, wrong. In some strange way it is away from me. Doesn't matter if I don't lose anything, my money, my health. I am being robbed. Similarly I resist when I see self promotion on Twitter or Faceboo...
