Introduction to Second Life
In short Second Life (or SL) could be described as a three dimensional virtual world, an interactive multimedia platform and online community *. It is not a game per se, but it includes game-like elements, which can be utilized on gaming. Second Life has also online commercing elements and it's own currency, Linden Dollars (L$) which can be bought with and traded as real life currency. Basic usage of SL is free. \ To be able to use Second Life one needs to create an avatar (or two). Avatar will have a starting appearance, which is chosen on the registration form. The appearance can be...
About: Flickr
Web is full of photo sites. Some of them are free, some require payment. They all offer different services and ways to use. One of the most popular photo sites is Flickr. It is my personal choice of a photo site and it is where many of the photos and other images seen on this site are available on. In the following I will give a brief introduction to Flickr and using it for marketing. Flickr allows it’s users to post photos, other images and videos to be viewed by other Flickr users, everyone or just selected users. Flickr users can also post comments and notes on photos as well as add the...
WTF? Social media?
This week schools in Finland have started to get back on with it after the summer break. And to celebrate their last moments of freedom kids have been having parties at leas according the news clips I've noticed. What really caught my eye on the news clips was the final notice that told us the information about these parties was spread through social media. Social media is huge. But what is social media? Facebook, you might say. Or Twitter, if that's your cup of tea. Maybe even blogs or forums. Right? Right? To be honest, the term social media is a bit vague. However there's no o...
About: Twitter
Twitter is probably one of the first examples to come in mind when talking about social media or social networking. Usually Twitter is described as a microblogging service which allows the users to send and read messages, called tweets. In the following I will take a brief look on what Twitter is and how it can be used. The basic idea of Twitter is allowing users to send and read short, 140 characters long messages telling what they are up to or sharing their ideas. Formerly Twitter asked it’s users to answer the question “What are you doing?”, but just last year the question was change...
Planning to be social
Many companies and organizations dive head first into social media. They create accounts and pages to services such as Twitter and Facebook without stopping to think why. The outcome is usually empty, hollow and dull and it interests and impresses no-one. \ On the other hand organizations spend huge amount of time and effort to plan everything in advance. Social media and it's services are like living organisms. They evolve. Users of these services also evolve and their ways using them change all the time. New users' groups may take over the services that earlier used to attract another...
I don't exist
I don't know at which point this happened. A couple of years ago, if you made a search with my name, Mervi Eskelinen, it would have returned my site (the one that was here before) as the first hit. A couple of weeks ago I noticed my site was fourth or fifth on the list. So I decided now it's the time to stop stalling and launch the new blog. So I did. Nothing happened. I was still fourth or fifth. And the address was something like helmikuu.net/mervi/blog, which wasn't there anymore. After some days I created a URL redirect from the non-existing blog-folder to the real front page. It seemed...
How hard can it be?
It's been such a long time since I've actually been blogging or had a decent website, I have hard time to decide where to start. I don't seem to be able to decide what sort of content to publish, how much info is needed or what to blog about. It's like trying to swim after a long winter. I know I can do it. But the water is cold and I'm slightly unsure if I can still keep myself from not drowning. Back in 2005 or whenever I blogged last time most of us had a huge list of blogs and other sites on the sidebar of our blog or at least as a separate site (or both). For a couple of days I had a bl...
