Why Drupal?
My choice of CMS is Drupal. It's an open source platform built for all sorts of sites from simpler personal blogs to more complexed sites. Because I know people seem to think other CMS' are better, I decided to list some reasons why I think Drupal is the best around. A couple of years ago I tried a bunch of different platforms in order to find the best one for my needs. Before this I had mostly been building websites and some simple database or text file based content managements from scratch. Joomla seemed promising, but at the time it wasn't flexible enough and for some reason I found...
How web design should be seen
I have come to a conclusion on how web design should be seen. As an entity. Of course there are lots of different smaller and bigger details in the design, but simply put there are three main issues. The following list includes these main issues in their order of importance. The order of a design process may be somewhat different. 1. Content Content is of course the main thing on a website. Without content the website doesn't exist. Well, it can exist, but it's pretty much blank. Therefore content should be the priority. The site is build around the content, not the other way around. 2...
Hot Font #1: Lato
Here we go with a new series called Hot Fonts. The series will be published once in a while and will feature fonts I like. The first Hot Font is my current favorite, Lato. Lato is a clear and simple, yet beautiful sans-serif and includes 10 styles, from hairline to black, non-italic and italic. Lato means summer in Polish and a barn in Finnish. Created by Ćukasz Dziedzic, the font is published under SIL Open Font License (OFL) and is free. Lato on Font Squirrel and Google Web Fonts.
Some like it homespun
I like roaming around CSS galleries. And I do often like the stuff I see there. But sometimes a thought goes through my head: Why do all these sites look the same? Often these sites are built to look cool, but not to look like the organization and the people who form it. They are designed to be all hip and pop and in, but not personal and interesting. The hipster corporate style as I've called it before. A new client I talked with today said she doesn't want their site to look like it's been made just to look flashy by some third party. She said she wants the site to have that homemade f...
Platform of creativity
Internet means a platform of creativity for me. It does mean other stuff too, like source of information and a way of connecting with people everywhere. But what mainly interests me personally about the net is how easy it is to create and share the creations on it. I started to make websites pretty early on as I got to use net (and web obviously). This happened in high school late 90's, since Internet wasn't very common thing in Finnish countryside back then. I loved the fact I could create something and share it instantly with the whole world. Besides of creating a website I was able to als...
CSS boring
Am I imagining or are most of these CSS galleries boring? They seem to showcase the same style all over and over again. The same style with certain little tweaks. This sort of colorful hipster corporate style, decorated with big slogans, including neatly balanced colors and made special with adding on something seemingly "fun" and "imaginative". Or are the designers boring?
