Forget SEO, concentrate on user experience
User experience, UX, is a hot topic these days. In a summarised definition, UX concerns the emotions and attitudes a person has about your website (or app or whatnot). As in a while ago search engine optimising was what everyone talked about, and before that it was all content marketing, now user experience is what makes the hearts fill with joy. Okay, admittedly I was being sarcastic there. However, laced with my sarcasm or not, user experience has became a huge deal and that's no wonder. Lots of experienced web folks are throwing SEO in the back seat, due to search engines becoming more and...
Beware of the hyperlink
Recently I saw a worrying comment on Facebook: I don't usually click links. I only follow images and comments, links I brush aside. Uh oh, I thought. That's no good. Hossein Derakhshan, Iran's blogfather, wrote how he feels that Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are breaking the web. These services, amongst others, are trying to keep people on their sites and apps, without letting them out. Ever. Instagram doesn't even allow links on posts and Facebook has been encouraging its users to post things natively, within Facebook. As the latest twist Twitter is working on long Tweets, extremely...
The /now page
Not that long ago, just in October, I saw people talking on Twitter about something called /now page. It's an idea, prompted by Derek Sivers, to add a simple /now page to your site. A movement of a sort. The idea of a /now page is to list what you are doing, what are your priorities and focuses right now. It works as a reminder and as a declaration for you. I liked the idea from the beginning, and finally created my own /now page. It turned out to be a great exercise. What do I really do, what are my interests and what is, as well as what isn't, important to me. I will keep updating the...
Statistically obsessed
Measure, analyze, check your stats, take a look at the insights. Whether you are running a business website, a personal blog, a Twitter account or a Facebook page, there is someone breathing down your neck asking about the numbers. How's the traffic? Is there enough engagement? Are you sharing and getting your content shared enough? Different analytics services are going hot collecting data for you, and most of all, for advertisers. Everyone is hot and bothered about the statistics. Even your readers are judging your blog by how many comments and how many shares your posts are getting. The wor...
Mobile-friendly for SEO
Google has been helping mobile users find mobile-friendly sites for a while now. By the end of this month they are expanding the use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. Many websites are running the same story about how you are going to be in trouble if your site is not mobile. For my huge amusement, some blogs which are not mobile-friendly are also giving you advice on this subject. With all this potential misinformation and panic, it's time to take a calm look at what's happening and how this all is affecting your search engine optimisation. Please note the following emphasises G...
Creating circles and rounded corners with CSS3
All the so called modern browsers support now at least most of CSS3. This gives you lots of freedom with web design without excessive use of images. Previously when you wanted to have rounded corners or make round elements you needed to use images or other of trickery. Now you have border-radius and it's so easy. There are multiple online generators for creating border-radius and other CSS3 effects, so you don't even have to remember all the details. I use this property for many things, including creating round images and nicely rounded input buttons. In this post you can find a few ideas of...
Creating a website from content to structure to design
Most website projects are very design-heavy. This is due to many reasons, one of them the rise of visual web. Website projects are design oriented also because of the over enhanced position of the designers. Unfortunately many of designers have only understanding of the aesthetics, but no knowledge of the technical aspects or even how people use websites. Additionally website projects usually don't include people with that sort of overall understanding of web and people using websites, and the technical understanding is included in projects as the last part of it. This is why design often co...
