Hot Font #18: Josefin Slab
In case you are wondering what's the font used to decorate the new look of this site I'll tell you: It's a Hot Font called Josefin Slab. I've grown to really like slab-serif fonts and Josefin's slab version is one of those I enjoy. (Edit: The site has since been redesigned multiple times and the fonts have changed.) Josefin Slab is a moderately decorative and vintage-feeling font. It's attractive enough to be used for enhancing designs as well as it's clear for longer text areas too. Josefin Slab comes with 10 different styles, Thin, Light, Regular, SemiBold, Bold and their italic counterp...
Are newsletter overlays worth hiding your content?
I was checking my emails and clicked on a link of this newsletter for which I had signed up a while back. The link brought me to the article as intended and then like a slap on my face an overlay with newsletter sign up form appeared. Thanks! I'm already on your stupid newsletter. And now I'm not reading your stupid article, because that stupid overlay slapped me around so hard I forgot what I was doing. I left the site, of course. These newsletter overlays make me mad. The overlays that are timed to pop up a bit later make me go even more bonkers. The overlays, especially those that come ou...
So much more than Visual Web
Web is so much more than just photos or videos. All this talk about Visual Web and how videos are the way to go is so sad. It's sad for it always seem like there's no room for anything but visual and videos. The beauty of web is in the fact that there are so many different ways to communicate with others and express yourself. You are not tied to one way, you don't have to do it with images or videos. You can and may, you can choose to go some other way. When you want to be truly accessible thousand words will trump any photo or a video. There are those of us (not just me, many of us, trust...
How to get my site on top 3 of Google search results
Today a client of a previous web development project sent me a question: How can I get my website on the top 3 of Google search results? I squirmed, hit my head on the wall and went overall dramatic over the question for a while. Since I had just came from a run (in time before the rain it raineth every day) I decided to take a shower before writing my response. The following is my reply to the question with some modifications. Do note that the reply was originally written in Finnish and there's always a huge possibility of lost in translation between such different languages. The respons...
The monotonic web
There's a new version of Twitter. Some say it looks great, some say it looks like crap. I say it looks like every other site. Currently there are a couple of big trends for websites. There's flat design and there's the whole idea of "visual web". Basic colours, clear blocks, simplifying to a fault and lots of big images, which are preferably photos. It looked good for a while, until it spread everywhere. Now the web is very monotone. Most sites look the same and it's hard to make a distinction between them. The fancy and techy ones go with the approach Twitter has taken. Beauty related web...
Hot Font #17: Roboto, Roboto Condensed and Roboto Slab
It's time to present you another Hot Font. This is called Roboto and there are actually 3 different families, the normal one, more narrow Roboto Condensed and softer (slab) serif Roboto Slab. Roboto is a diverse font. It works beautifully in longer texts but makes a great title or for instance poster font as well. The Roboto families come with several different styles. My fave of these three is the slab serif version. Created by Christian Robertson, Roboto, Roboto Condensed and Roboto Slab are published under Apache License, Version 2.0 and are free. Roboto on Font Squirrel and Go...
