The curious case of the sidebar
Sidebars where introduced on websites back in time when we would make layouts with tables or frames. That was in time before anyone knew anything about anything about web. The websites where built with the idea of blocks: Tables with their rows and columns or boxes of frames on the top, middle, bottom, left and right. Currently lots of webby-techy-types are campaigning against sidebars. They want the websites to be cleared off of sidebars altogether. In some cases it makes sense. Often a site doesn't need a sidebar and in many cases it's filled with useless stuff. These webby-techy-types mak...
Fixing iframe videos on responsive website
Have you ever embedded a video from YouTube or a song from Spotify on a responsive website? Unless there's some sort of css-trick to fix the width and height of the video, it will be oversized and impossible to view on narrow screens. The simple fix would be to add inside media queries the desired width and height as auto. That works with images. However it doesn't really work with iframes. For them the height gets all wrong. Fortunately I found a fix. It's an old trick, but seems to still work. So first you must wrap your iframe thingie with div, that has class video-container. Yo...
Google AdSense goes Responsive
Previously the Google ads had static sizes, width and height that remained the same no matter what size your screen was. It was a problem, since wide ads would crop on the smaller screens and smaller ads weren't very effective on the wider ones. Now Google AdSense advertisement is working better on responsive websites. There's an actual responsive ad version, which you can use with media queries to change the ad size depending on the screen size. That's pretty cool. Of course in order to implement this you have to understand a little bit of css and media queries. Slapping the code on you...

Why high bounce rate doesn't mean your site is in trouble
Bounce rate is one of those parts of website analytics that is most often misinterpreted. Those who don't understand it tend to think high bounce rate always means a website is in trouble and low means it's doing great. They have no clue how people function and how web works. Additionally bounce rate as a term is usually misunderstood. Therefore you are likely to find lots of information on how it's time to panic if your bounce rate is high and how to reduce it right now. How your website is too ugly or your content sucks. This might be the case, but there's much more to bounce rate than m...

Why I won't use the Finnish language translation of your service
One of my biggest projects this year, Stylebook, has a newsletter list on MailChimp. Anyone can subscribe to it through our website. The newsletters, as our service, are in Finnish. And because MailChimp offers Finnish translation for their basic forms and confirmation emails, we've turned that on. We already had noticed that some of the automatic translations are a bit funny. Unfortunately it also appears they cannot be changed manually anywhere. Yesterday my business partner pointed out another rather comical translation mistake: The form where you can update your subscription options...
