Get on blogging, chapter 3 – The content

Get on blogging is a weekly series about blogging and becoming a blogger. This chapter dwells in the content of your blog. Do you need to have a speciality and make niche markets happy? Is personal good or bad? The main thing about your blog is of course the content. It's what drives people on your blog and keeps them coming again. It's what your blog is about. If you are only thinking about starting a blog I hope you have some sort of an idea of what you want or even need to write about. I already asked on the first chapter of this series a couple of important questions: Why do you want...

Get on blogging, chapter 2 – Choosing the platform

Get on blogging is a new weekly series about blogging and becoming a blogger. In this second chapter I talk about choosing a blogging platform. When you have decided to start blogging you will need to have a place for your blog. You can either host your own website or use one of the hosted blogging services. Hosted blogging services offer ready made platform for your immediate writing needs, whereas your own blog must be "built" before you can get on blogging. How to choose which platform works the best for you? Self hosting or hosted? Self hosting a blog requires purchasing a domain (e...

Get on blogging, chapter 1 – Where do I begin?

This is the first chapter of the new weekly Get on blogging series. In this first chapter I warm you up with the idea of blogging. Why would you be blogging? Back in 2001 or something when I started writing short journal type posts on my website blogging was still something new and rare. It wasn't always even called blogging, though the term weblog had been coined already a few years back. Only the ones who could build a website themselves and who were interested in writing these public diaries were doing it. Now everyone, their mom and cat have a blog. The things have changed. Creating a...

More free images for your blog or design projects

Remember when I shared in March a bunch of resources for finding free photos for your design projects? Less than a couple of weeks ago Creative Commons tipped on their Facebook page about a couple of newish sites for finding high quality public domain (CC0) photos. Public domain photos are completely free and can be used on personal and commercial projects freely without attribution. As long as you remember not to try and take credit for taking these photos. That's granted and I don't believe you are that lame. Do you know more websites for finding high quality public domain photos? Do l...

How many people see my posts on Facebook?

On Friday I wrote about Facebook advertising and boosting posts. It reminded me of the subject on how many people actually see your or your page's posts on Facebook. You might think everyone who are your friends, followers or who like your page see the posts and choose to ignore them. But no, this is not the case. Only a handful of the full amount of your friends, followers or people liking your page see your posts when they are first submitted. Of course if you choose to target your post then even less people will see them. For Facebook pages it's usually around 10% of the people liking...

Notes about advertising and boosting posts on Facebook

Lately I've been dabbling with Facebook advertisement from a very small business point of view. I run a website called Stylebook with two other ladies and we do pretty much everything ourselves. Thus I have been making a bunch of homemade test drives with Facebook ads. It's good to note that our advertisement budget is very small (if you are thinking a small number, think smaller now) so I haven't been able to throw lots of money and ads in and see what comes out. Due to this I have been making very refined testing, when it comes to budgets and targeting. I have made a couple of very differe...

A thousand words is worth more than a picture

Today I saw this nice and pretty about page of a blogger and a designer. It was a fully laid out with of lots of photos, graphics and text blocks of sweet fonts. The whole thing was one big image. Images are filling the web. While lots of people are talking about the revolution of a video, images currently rule. In addition to basic photos and images websites are filled with infographics, selfies, cat photos, how-to-photos and photo collages to mention some. Those of us who know the power of Pinterest know we must add at least one photo per blog post to be shared there. Even the previou...
