What is responsive design in short
If you are confused when you hear someone talking about responsive design or layout, you are not alone. Also people who work with websites seem to be baffled about the concept. Because of this confusion I decided to whip up a simple explanation or definition for responsive in web design. Responsive design/layout is the term used to mean a website layout, which responds to the screen (or browser) width. Basically the layout width depends on the screen/browser width. In addition to the width some other parts of the style of the website, such as graphics, other images and fonts may vary in si...
The web is never ready
I've been working in a whole bunch of web projects. The projects have varied from business sites to educational applications and personal projects (like this blog for myself). And one thing I know I've learned is there's not such thing as ready and same when making a website. During these over 10 years I've been messing around the conventions, standards and techniques have changed so much the past feels like a whole different world. For instance for my last blog, sometime in the early ears of this century, I built the whole content management and commenting system. I can assure you it wasn't...
Why the first impression matters
Have you noticed how most or at least a big bunch of people who come to your blog leave instantly? Often they come through search or other sites, take a look and storm off. They won't even have time to skim through your latest blog post, so what's wrong then? Content is what brings people back to your blog. It makes them stay and it makes them share. Content is the most important thing on and about your blog. However there's another more important thing when you try and get the new people to come in and read your excellent content. It's the first impression. The first impression doesn...
Size matters or Use bigger fonts
As it comes to web and email newsletter design and the fonts, the size matters. For a while back in time (not that long ago) it was hip and pop and cool and all sorts of neat things to use rather small fonts on websites. The general idea was it made the sites look more professional. That's totally wrong. When your text content matters (and when doesn't it matter?) it needs to be easy to read. Small text is terrible to read. Headachy terrible. You may have heard 14px is currently fashionable size. However this size isn't always the best solution as the appearance of different type...
Blogs, design and advertisement
When you try and get some money out of your blog, the first thing that comes to mind is advertisement. Especially if your blog gets lots of traffic, selling ad space sounds like a great idea. Advertisement however comes with a design problem. To make advertising effective, the readers must notice it, yet it cannot be too distracting. If the advertisement is too distracting, it will annoy the readers and can send them off of the site. Google Adsense is a very popular way to include advertisement on a blog. These ads are quite difficult to fit in a design. The image ads are often q...
Hot Font #8: FoglihtenNo04
The number 8 Hot Font is very decorative font. So decorative it's almost unreadable. Not quite, but almost. Yet it's so pretty! FoglihtenNo04 is beautiful and complex font. It's basically geometrical and quite clean font with whimsical swirls and lines which result to a controlled chaos. I'd use this in big sizes on posters and such. Created by gluk the font is free and licensed under SIL Open Font License (OFL). FoglihtenNo04 is available on gluk fonts.
A couple of web design tips
As someone who's job is to make websites look good and work well, I'd like everyone to use professional help with their web designs. Unfortunately this isn't always a possibility. I get it. An attractive and accessible design with the interesting content will lure more visitors, invite them to come back and stick around. And a good design will give a boost for your content as well. It'll improve readability besides of looking good. It works also as a sign of professionalism and tell that you are really invested in your site. The following tips are aimed mainly for those who aren't exactly...
