Free InDesign alternative: Scribus

As everyone is creating pdf-e-books now I'm sure many of you are looking for a good layout program. Today you can get InDesign, the Creative Cloud version, for about 20 USD a month. The monthly subscription may fit your budget, but if it doesn't, there's a free alternative.

Scribus is a free Open Source program for creating professional looking layouts. It works on your Mac or Windows PC, as well as Linux and many other operating systems you've never heard about.

With Scribus you can create complex layouts from scratch or use one of the templates as a base.

Scribus allows you to add images, text, shapes, bezier curves, freehand lines and PDF-elements (buttons, inputs etc.) in your layout. All elements can of course be edited, for instance you can set fonts and colors of your texts or parts of texts.

The program is also in constant development and the community appears to be active. As it comes to free options and in layout programs in general, Scribus seems like very good option.

In my opinion Scribus is rather easy to learn. However I suggest taking a look at Scribus Documentation to learn how it all works or at least to keep it open while you dabble around.

Have you tried Scribus or thinking of trying it? What do you think? How do you feel it compares to others, such as InDesign? Do you have experience in other similar programs? Do tell in the comments section!
