Self branding is challenging

Self branding is challenging. Especially it's challenging to someone who has always been taught to be humble and not make too much noise about herself. And it's very challenging in a culture where self promotion is considered as nothing but egoistic. However self branding is needed in many situations: Finding a job, starting a (small) company, promoting a blog or a Twitter feed, getting traffic and faves and comments for Flickr photos, and so forth.

What makes it challenging is the fact that branding is much about claiming a territory. Self branding is about saying "this is what I do and I'm really great, even the best, in it". This is where slogans and titles come in the picture. They are sometimes redundant, but they make the branding easier. Even if the title means nothing, it's easier to promote oneself by saying "I'm [insert redundant title]" than to try and give a detailed explanation what one does and can do.

If one doesn't have any problems, such as excessive amounts of modesty, of claiming their territory, then there's usually someone or group of someones who are willing to make it clear how this person is a fraud and a brag. Self branding is all about standing out from the crowd. And it's not always easy. It takes usually lots of time and work. And hefty amount of guts.

While writing this post the author, a Digital Craftsperson, consumed a big cup of plum flavored white tea. It was delicious.
