*Update: Instagram has changed it's user interface and architecture drastically since I wrote this spring 2013. See the most recent information at Dealing with Instagram spam.*
Spam is a huge problem everywhere online. Including Instagram.
To fight spam Instagram is censoring hashtags some more, some less offensive. However their methods are useless and efforts futile and more and more spam comments and spam accounts flood to the service.
Many grammers I follow have decided to turn their accounts private to get rid of spam comments. I don't agree with this either and I never just blindly follow some private account if they follow me (sorry folks, that's how I roll).
But there are better ways to go.
Spam comments can and are best to be deleted and spammers can be blocked.
This time I tell you how to remove spam comments from your Instagram photos with the iPhone app. I'm sure Android app has similar functions. Stay tuned in next few days to learn how to block and report spammers when they follow you.
Go to the comments section of the photo with a spam comment. As if you were about to write a comment to it.
Find the spam comment and slide it to the right. Two icons are exposed: Trashcan and an arrow. Click the trashcan.
New buttons show up. Click the one that says "Delete & Report Abuse". You can also only delete the image, but then it won't be reported to Instagram and the spammer will continue to spam all over.
Choose the reason why you want to report the comment. For regular spam it would be "Spam or Scam". If it's profanity or offensive comment, use "Abusive Content". Most likely it's the first reason though.
That's it! Now the comment has been removed from your photo.
