Inception

WARNING: The following includes spoilers about Inception. I don’t recommend to read this post unless you have already seen the movie.

It's likely you haven't been able to live without hearing something about Inception, Christopher Nolan's latest work. It's very likely you have heard or read spoilers, minor or bigger ones. It's also likely someone has told you the film is so awesome and someone else has told you it was really confusing.

Basically Inception tells a story about Cobb, portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio and his crew of extremely smart thieves, who steal ideas and secrets from people's dreams. Actually this time they are about to plant an idea, rather than steal it. Since planting an idea is harder than stealing one, the crew need to hire some extra people and make some serious groundwork before getting into the work. The planting, Inception is a hard and complicated job. Cobb's dead wife, or the memory of her makes it even more complicated. She tends to mess up with Cobb's work.

But that's not quite it. Inception is a dream, all the way through. It is Cobb's dream, in which he tries to accomplish a feeling of fulfillment. Reach the catharsis. There's no reality, only dream. I'm certain of that. There are many hints, many things as little mistakes that make sense only in a dream. Like Cobb's wife sitting on the wrong windowsill. Or the top, Cobb's totem, which turns out to be something from his wife's dream. It must be a dream.

For me Inception is like a Kieslowski film with the big Hollywood budget and production. A small painting in big frames. Somehow it just fits the frames perfectly. The story and the whole darn mise-en-scène is just beautiful and captivating. The cast, which includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, Ellen Page and so forth is spot on. And yes, the hotel hallway... Long way from 3rd Rock from the Sun, as Nathan Fillion put it.
