Zen

Years ago in my earlier blog I used to take the latest designs on css Zen Garden and review them. I'm not sure when the site has been updated the last time and if there's going to be any new designs on it. However I decided to take the last eight designs and make some quick notes about them.

  • A Walk in the Garden is a quite simple and very green design. It's stylish and has that sort of a "hip designer touch" on it. Something like this could work great on a eco or a gardening related site, but as well as a site for some ecological brand.
  • Kyoto Forest is one of the many Japan inspired designs on css Zen Garden. First it seems very colorful, but in the end the colors are subtle and muted, and there's a very limited selection of them. Nice, but not the most inventive design.
  • Sakura, another Japan inspired design has a cute and fresh look. The design is nothing exactly new, but it is clear and somehow very lively.
  • CSS Co., Ltd. is a corporate look. From the color scheme (orange and grey) to the images it is a very typical business site design. Clean, but boring.
  • Oceanscape features a wide ocean background. It's very blue and there's some tropical fishes on it. The whole look is very stabile and the fishes look frozen. I like the idea, but there's that little something missing. That little something which would make the design live.
  • Orchid Beauty belongs to the css Zen Garden category of "haven't I seen this before". It's nice and very pretty, but not actually my style.
  • Make ’em Proud has a vintage look. The design reminds me of The Adventures of Tintin. Interesting and unique.
  • Under the Sea! is another sea inspired and also another vintage design in this batch. I like the vintage styled sea creatures, but the block at the bottom creates a bit too much clutter. Maybe this works better on a bigger screen, but on my Macbook it's just a bit too messy.

I like things simple so from these eight designs I would choose A Walk in the Garden and Sakura as my favorites.
